Why I do this
What draws me to this work
What hooked me as a schoolboy is still what drives me. Everything a person needs to breathe passes through the organs I operate on, and a diagnosis in the chest — a lung cancer, a collapsed lung, a broken chest wall — frightens people in a way few others do. Lung cancer still kills more people in the UK than any other cancer, yet caught early it can be cured with an operation. Being able to offer someone that is a privilege I have never got used to. The same is true of problems that are not cancer but quietly ruin lives: rib injuries that stop someone sleeping, a slipping rib dismissed for years as “nothing”, a lung that keeps collapsing.
Born in Italy, I now practise in London as a consultant thoracic surgeon at Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust) alongside my private practice. I have also sat on the other side of the desk: when my mother had skin cancer, I was the relative caring for her, asking the questions and waiting for the answers, and I know exactly how that feels.
My job is to explain it plainly, give you a clear answer on whether surgery is right for you and, if it is, do it as safely as it can be done — the way Mr Manché taught me.

Still operating, every week
Why it matters
My medico-legal opinions are drawn from current practice, not recollection of how a procedure used to be done.
“An expert who still operates is harder to attack on currency.”

Medico-legal practice
A practice built on a deliberate cap
I take 4–5 reports a month — a limit I set myself, so that every instruction gets the time it needs rather than being fitted around whatever else is in the diary. Providing expert evidence since 2011, with over 300 reports produced to date.
Instructed by claimant, defendant and as a single joint expert, from firms across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and from as far as New Zealand. Instructed in criminal proceedings in the Crown Court and in foreign jurisdictions.
Instruction types accepted: clinical negligence (breach of duty and causation), personal injury (condition and prognosis), industrial and occupational disease, criminal proceedings (mechanism and survivability of chest injury), coroner’s inquests, and single joint expert instructions.
